The Weak is Strong and Strong is Weak Poker TellMany new players at poker hear the words "poker tells" and most of them think that it is some strange word meaning they talk about their hands or something. In reality that is pretty close as what it really means is that a person is readable and other players can tell what a player is holding by non-communication and without the player knowing they are communicating this. There are many different types of "poker tells" and there are a lot common tells that almost all players display. Some tells even professional players can't help exhibiting and giving away more information than they want. A poker tell is any behavior; habit or physical reaction that a player displays unconsciously that informs other players about his hand. Here are some common Poker Tells: Weak Means Strong, Strong Means Weak This is one of the most common poker tells that you will see around the poker table. Poker is a game of illusion or deceit. Most of the time when your opponent tends to appear strong they actually hold a weak hand and vise versa, when they act weak your opponent holds a strong hand. There are two areas about this poker tells, the betting tactics and the table posture. 1) Betting Tactics - An example, you have in your hand an average flop without a pair, and unlikely to hit a straight or flush draw, your opponent on the other side abruptly bets two times the size of the pot. Betting this much your opponent is making it very hard for you to have the odds of the pot by justifying a call. Your opponent does this to try and force you to fold. There are two options why he did this, first, your opponent has nothing and he or she is trying to buy the pot or on the other hand, your opponent has a very good hand that he or she is trying to make the pot too expensive for everyone to draw to stick around. The case is not always the same, remember that a poker game is a game of deceit and illusion; players tend to represent one thing and mean the other. 2) Table Posture - Another explanation for this poker tells of weak means strong and strong means weak, and is comparatively easy to detect, is how players act after betting a huge amount. For example, a player bets a huge amount of money and then sits back and acts passive as if nothing happened, they will also tend to avoid eye contact. With this act, it usually means the player may have a good hand. As a good poker player you should be observant and to learn to read gestures and body movement to know what they are up to. Always aim to identify why other players act in a specific way. |
